AMPLIFICATION & ABANDONMENT
Catalyzing durable conservation at scale
By 2020, policy-relevant scientific analyses of the amplification and abandonment of conservation interventions will be commonplace, with foundational scientific insights mainstreamed within key conservation policies and practices. Conservation progress will be faster and more durable.
Attaining and sustaining effective conservation at scale is fundamental to conservation policy and practice, but conservation science has largely ignored the amplification and abandonment of conservation interventions. To accelerate and sustain conservation at scale, this Initiative will transform scientific understanding of the amplification and abandonment of protected areas and other area-based conservation interventions – and ensure that these insights are integrated into conservation policy and practice. In particular, this Initiative will build upon prior CI research examining the diffusion of conservation innovations, conservation progress beyond protected areas, and protected area downgrading, downsizing, and degazettement (PADDD). Our efforts will advance frontiers of knowledge, catalyze further research, and enable science-based efforts to accelerate the amplification of conservation interventions and to mitigate the risk that conservation interventions will be abandoned.
Catalyze scientific understanding of amplification and abandonment of conservation interventions.
Translate research insights on amplification and abandonment of conservation interventions into evidence-based policies and practices that catalyze durable conservation at scale.
Enhance capacity of CI staff and partners to understand and address amplification and abandonment of conservation interventions.
Ensure necessary human, financial, and technological resources to deliver on initiative vision.
